This might sound paradoxical, but there’s one little trick I have found in my life that I have gotten guidance for from the Quran.
The Quran reminds us in Surah Ibrahim (14:7):
“If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor].”
لَئِن شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ
This divine promise teaches us that expressing gratitude invites more blessings into our lives. It’s a profound spiritual “cheat code” that works on a deeper level than just positive thinking. It reinforces our tawakkul and keeps us going forward stress-free.
In simple terms, in order to move forward and get more, we should look back and be grateful. Whereas Western philosophies encourage us to “push through,” to keep grinding, to force our way forward no matter what, Islam teaches us the opposite.
Gratitude is a powerful tool. Take a moment to appreciate everything you do have, even the smallest things. Start with the basics: clothing, food, and shelter. These are necessities in life that are most easily taken for granted.
Of course, when life feels tough, it can be hard to see the good. But that’s exactly when gratitude becomes even more important. Force yourself to find at least one thing you’re thankful for today. Maybe it’s as simple as your socks keeping your toes warm on a chilly Johannesburg morning (yes, it’s cold here!). Maybe it’s the taste of your morning coffee, or the ability to breathe.
I know it sounds cliché to say keep a gratitude journal. Perhaps just to get started, and once it becomes a habit, you won’t need it. Every day, make a note (mental or written) of one or two things you’re thankful for, no matter how small or ordinary. Over time, you’ll notice that your list grows and your perspective shifts. What once felt overwhelming or “stuck” will begin to feel easier and filled with barakah and aafiyah.
Take a deep breath right now. Feel the air fill your lungs. Smell the world around you. Appreciate the simple miracle of being alive. When you practice gratitude, you’re strengthening your connection to Allah, opening your heart to His endless mercy, and acknowledging that every good thing in your life is a gift.
So next time you feel stuck, don’t just push forward blindly and drive yourself crazy. Look back, look around, and give thanks for all you have. Remember, Allah’s promise is clear: If you are grateful, He will increase you. So make shukr a daily habit and watch how your life begins to change.
